General Questions

Q: How can I choose a good nursing home for my loved one?
A: First of all, your hospital Case Manager may be able to answer questions that you may have. Only you and your family know the individual needs of your loved one. It is important to spend time talking with our Social Services staff to help us understand and accommodate your family’s needs and wants as we coordinate the clinical care plan for our guests. It may be helpful to see the room and treatment areas that will be involved during your recuperative stay. They may also bring personal items to make them feel more at home. Some of our long-term guests also have furniture from home, and we can accommodate their wishes as long as the pieces do not invade the space of a roommate or pose a safety hazard to other residents, visitors or our employees. Our clinical management staff may be available if you have clinical questions about the care of your loved one.

Q: Who pays for nursing home care?
A:
You may speak with our Business Office Manager, Social Services or Admissions Directors regarding the insurance benefits and eligibility for care.


• Medicare Part A benefits may be available to cover skilled nursing, rehabilitation, medications, meals, supplies and equipment which in some cases can be up to 100 days. For the first 20 days, traditional Medicare pays 100% of skilled care. From day 21 to day 100, the quest will have a co-pay to be paid personally by the guest or by a secondary insurance.  Guests with a Medicare Advantage plan (i.e Humana, BC/BS Medicare Advantage or United Healthcare products, etc.) may find that the co-pay days and rates differ from traditional Medicare.  Medicare and the various skilled providers have specified criteria for coverage; not all care needed is considered “skilled” under these plans so it is essential to frequently review reimbursement status.

• Medicaid is an option for some patients in need of long-term nursing care, or to help cover co-pay or other costs not covered by Medicare. If you are eligible, our Business Office staff may assist you in the application process.

Q: How often does my loved one see a physician while in your facility?
A: We are proud to say that Dr. Robert Lee is the Medical Director for our facility, and he has served us proudly for over 30 years. We also contract with another physician group to provide complete coverage for all our guests. Your assigned physician should visit upon admission and make periodic rounds thereafter. Each group also employees Nurse Practitioners that are in our facility five days per week to provide you with additional advanced practice medical monitoring. Our nurses also have access to a provider 24/7.

Q: How often will the patient receive therapy?
A:  A plan of care will be arranged in coordination with the physician according to the needs and tolerance of our guests. Normally, each patient is seen five days per week. Arrangements are made for care on the weekend, if needed. Our therapy staff is a group of highly trained physical, occupational and speech therapists with years of experience. Many consider our department one of the best in East TN!

Q: Do you provide telephone and TV for your guests?
A: Most of our guests now prefer to bring their own cell phones to the facility. If not, a phone is always made available for their use. If they prefer a land-line phone in their room, the phone must be provided by the family and billing is set up directly to the guest through Century Link for a minimal fee. TV’s are provided in each of the skilled care rooms along with basic cable. Upgraded packages are available at additional cost to the guest.

Q: Is smoking permitted?
A: Yes, we are one of a few facilities in the area that allow smoking. Our guests are allowed to smoke while supervised during assigned times on our courtyard patio.

Q: Can I join my loved one for a meal?
A: Absolutely! We encourage family involvement and our outside guests are welcome to enjoy a meal at a nominal fee.  A private dining area may also be requested for special events.

Q: Can my loved one leave the facility for visits or overnight?
A: You should consult your overall clinical condition with the nursing department or your physician before considering any therapeutic leave during your time of care. Some insurance plans do not allow overnight stays, as it is assumed that if you can tolerate a trip out of the building, then you do not meet the requirements for in-patient skilled care.

Q: Are pets allowed to visit?
A: Yes, we allow dogs and cats if on a leash and if they have up-to-date vaccinations. We want our guests to feel at home in our facility.

Q: What are the best times to visit?
A: There are no set visiting hours, but we do ask that you be courteous to a roommate if your loved one is not in a private room.

Q: Do you offer religious services?
A: Yes, we provide Sunday services on most Sundays and there are other opportunities to worship throughout the week. Special requests may also be made. Please check with our Social Services Department.

Q: Do you offer private rooms?
A: Yes, we have 2 newly renovated wings to accommodate our skilled care patients with private rooms on each wing. These are assigned upon availability, but we will do our best to accommodate your short term stay. A separate therapy department is located between these two wings for the convenience of these patients. Our goal is to make our patients as comfortable as possible while in our facility.
